Red opens with a Soldier move: discreet, hiding its plans and keeping options open. A favourite of masters.
- The Soldier moves up to make way for the Horse on the same side.
- Not rushing the central cannon: wait to see what Black chooses before deciding.
- Black often answers by advancing a Soldier too (the pawn-facing line) to keep the balance.
